The Blaufränkisch grape makes juicy, spicy red wines that are exceptionally food-friendly, like this bottling from Austrian vintner Alex Schreiner.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

While best known for its aromatic Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners, Austria also turns out excellent reds, mostly from Burgenland, a region south of Vienna along the Hungarian border. While the name Blaufränkisch doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, wines made from this red grape possess a grace that the name lacks, with supple tannins and fresh acidity. Alex Schreiner, an ambitious young vintner from an old winemaking family in the town of Gols, helps his father with the family winery but also makes a few wines under his own label, including this juniper-tinged Blaufränkisch.
