Spain’s little-known Godello grape makes refreshing, minerally white wines, like this peach-scented offering from Benaza.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
The lush, green river valleys of Galicia, on Spain’s Atlantic coast, look more like Ireland than Spain, with drizzly wet weather to match. Its native grapes are perfectly adapted to the cool, damp climate, and its crisp white wines pair deliciously with seafood. The best-known of these is Albariño; the rarer Godello (go-DAY-yo) grape was rescued from extinction in the 1970s. Benaza is a tiny, family-run winery located in Monterrei, the warmest and driest area in Galicia. It makes just two wines, both from 30- to 50-year-old estate vines.
