- WINERY Spy Valley
- GRAPE Sauvignon Blanc
- YEAR 2008
- COUNTRY New Zealand
- REGION Marlborough
Grapes for this zesty New Zealand white were grown in ancient riverbeds; the stony soil gives it a minerally note.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Bracingly tart and exuberantly fruity, this Sauvignon Blanc comes from the Waihopai Valley, a remote corner of New Zealand’s Marlborough region. Once considered too hard, too dry and too infertile for wine grapes, its success has proven (again) the old adage that stressed vines make great wines. Spy Valley’s vineyards are on sunny, southern slopes, where warm afternoons help ripen the fruit and lean, stony soils (once the bed of the nearby Omaka River) force vines to dig deep for nutrients.
