• WINERY Bodegas Señorio de Barahonda
  • GRAPE Monastrell
  • YEAR 2006
  • COUNTRY Spain
  • REGION Yecla

Made from Monastrell—the grape known as Mourvèdre in France—this Spanish red comes from some of the oldest vineyards in the country planted with that variety.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The fourth-generation Barahonda winery is run by Antonio Candela Poveda and his sons, Antonio and Alfredo. It’s a modern facility that spreads over 370 acres in Yecla, a coastal region in southwest Spain where the hot, windy climate is tempered by breezes off the Mediterranean. Sun-loving Monastrell is the region’s signature red grape and makes meaty, medium- to full-bodied wines with luscious fruit flavors. Most of the grapes for this bottling come from ungrafted vines more than a century old, which helps give the wine terrific concentration.
