Superstar winemaker Zelma Long helped craft this unusual red, an ultrasmooth blend made from six varietals across four vintages.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Jerry and Jean Bookwalter have released a multivintage red nearly every year since they founded their winery back in 1983. Subplot 22 is, appropriately, the 22nd vintage of this wine, which relies on the smoothness of older wines to round out the brash tannins of big grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Like chefs with a spice rack, son John Bookwalter and consultant Zelma Long experiment with blends of grapes, vintages and vineyards, here creating a wine of impeccable balance.
