Austrian vintner Ludwig Neumayer, the producer of this wine, brought new attention to the country’s underrated Traisental region.
What You Need To Know
Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s signature grape, a zesty, lightly herbaceous white variety that’s responsible for some of the world’s most food-friendly wines. This example comes from winemaker Ludwig Neumayer, who’s credited with almost single-handedly bringing the country’s Traisental region to prominence. Neumayer’s 22 acres lie on the right bank of the Traisen river, where the soils are extremely chalky. Planted mainly in rocky, steep terraces and farmed by hand, his vineyards produce fruit with a racy minerality that’s usually associated more with the wines of the famous Wachau district. Low yields and concentrated grapes give this wine fantastic intensity.
