California’s cool vintage in 2011 translates
into especially vivid, bright citrus flavors in
this mountain-grown Chardonnay.
What You Need To Know
Enkidu’s winemaker and owner,
Phil Staehle, has a knack for finding choice vineyards from Napa
and Sonoma counties’ under-the-radar spots, having made wine
at noted estates in both regions for more than a decade. This
Chardonnay comes from Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak, a new,
mountainous district that overlaps part of northern Sonoma
County. Defined by its elevation, the region lies at elevations from
1,600 to 3,000 feet, making it one of the state’s highest
winegrowing zones. Fog-free days and brisk coastal breezes mean
that grapes ripen fully but not too fast, a key to developing
complex flavors. Staehle fermented the wine in barrels to give it a
Apple and lemon zest.
