Del Rio Vineyards sells grapes to a slew of notable Oregon wineries, but holds a little fruit back to make its own wines.
What You Need To Know
Much of Oregon is too cool to grow grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah or Viognier, the variety that’s the base of this fragrant white. But Del Rio Vineyards is located in the Rogue Valley, the warmest and driest of the state’s wine regions. Founders Lee and Margaret Traynham have made their 1,000-acre ranch into one of Oregon’s premiere sources of warm-climate grapes, selling their fruit to esteemed wineries such as Domaine Serene, Bethel Heights, Erath and Penner Ash. A few years ago they got into the wine business themselves, converting a former apple-packing house into a small winery and hiring winemaker Jean-Michel Jussiaume. A native of the Loire Valley, Jussiaume excels with white wines, like this fresh, apricot-scented Viognier.
