While much of Oregon is too cool to grow grapes like Syrah, the Rogue Valley, where this Syrah comes from, is ideal for them.
What You Need To Know
Lee and Cookie Traynham diversified from raising cattle into raising grapes when they purchased a vast tract of farmland in southern Oregon’s Rogue Valley in 1997. The California cattle ranchers converted a huge pear orchard into a vineyard, and, when their grapes kept getting snapped up by well-regarded labels, they converted a former orchard packing house into a winery. French-born winemaker Jean-Michel Jussiaume comes from a family of vintners in Muscadet, a coastal region in the Loire Valley that’s France’s epicenter of crisp, zesty white wines. It’s no surprise then that this Syrah offers plenty of buoyant freshness in addition to plummy fruit. Fewer than 650 cases were produced.
