The lesser-known quarters of the Rhône
Valley, like the Luberon, where this red
comes from, are a source of terrific values.
What You Need To Know
Jean-François Ranvier directed the
cellar of a major Rhône Valley winery before branching out with
colleague and friend François Dauvergne. The duo hatched a plan
for a small, innovative wine company: Instead of buying freshly
pressed grapes or finished wines, as is common, they contract
with growers for specific plots of vines. Ranvier then works with
them on farming the fruit and oversees the vinification himself.
It requires far more work than the typical négociant model of
winemaking, but results in better wines at terrific prices. This
vibrant, delicious Grenache-Syrah blend is a case in point.
