This bold Tempranillo is a great example of the full-bodied reds coming out of California’s emerging Sierra Foothills region.
What You Need To Know
Tempranillo is Spain’s signature grape variety, responsible for that country’s greatest reds, including the majestic wines of Rioja. Not much Tempranillo grows in the US; this bottling from Dancing Coyote comes from a small vineyard high up in the foothills of the Sierra mountains, in Gold Rush country. Owned by the McCormack family—fifthgeneration California farmers who got into the wine business in 1998—Dancing Coyote is making a name for itself by specializing in lesser-known varietals such as Chenin Blanc, Albari.o and, more recently, Tempranillo. Working out of a Clarksburg winery built in 1868 as a granary, the McCormacks turned out just 17 barrels of this cuvée, which features the grape’s deep, spicy fruit flavors.
