Clonakilla is one of the great names in
Australian Shiraz. Its Hilltops cuvée gives an
affordable taste of the winery’s elegant style.
What You Need To Know
When John Kirk—an Irish-born,
Oxford-educated biochemist—moved to New South Wales’s
Canberra district with his family in 1968, he was surprised to
discover that there was little in the way of a local wine industry.
Kirk and his family planted vines and named their winery
Clonakilla, after Kirk’s grandfather’s Irish farm. Their cool-climate
Shiraz subsequently proved that Canberra could produce stellar
wines, and their coveted, iconic Shiraz-Viognier helped start a
nationwide trend for co-fermenting these traditional Rhône grape
varieties. First made in 2000, Clonakilla’s Hilltops Shiraz comes
