The tiny Claiborne & Churchill winery specializes in wines inspired by France’s Alsace region, including delicate Pinot Noir.
What You Need To Know
Some California Pinot Noirs are so ripely fruity, tannic and dark that they evoke more muscular grapes, like Syrah. But husband-and-wife vintners Clay Thompson and Fredericka Churchill-Thompson prefer the kind of sleek, spicy wines that come only from cool climates, such as those from Alsace. So for their Central Coast Pinot Noir, the duo and their winemaker, Coby Parker-Garcia, looked to Edna Valley, a green, coastal corridor that channels chilly ocean wind and fog. Their 2010 Pinot Noir shows its origins in its translucent garnet hue, bright, spicy aromatics and juicy red-fruit flavors.
