This blackberry-rich Syrah was made
by Doug Margerum, one of the stars of the
Santa Barbara County wine scene.
What You Need To Know
Silicon Valley has been a boon to
boutique winemaking in California. Cimarone Wines is another
case in point: Founders Priscilla and Roger Higgins retired to
wine country after careers at the epicenter of the tech industry.
Originally, they intended just to grow grapes, and planted a
26-acre vineyard in the rolling hills of coastal Santa Barbara
County. It’s located in Happy Canyon, a tiny, warmer pocket
of the cool region that’s suited to heat-tolerant grapes such as
Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. Soon they connected with local
vintner Doug Margerum, and started making their own wines,
among them this lush Syrah. It comes from a selection
of the best barrels of the 2009 vintage.
Black fruit flavors with
a floral edge.
Generous blackberry and
Cellar temperature—the bottle should be
cool to the touch.
Rich, bold, meaty roasts,
chops and stews; rare steaks
