White wines from the Loire’s Anjou appellation are made mostly in a crisp, dry style from the versatile Chenin Blanc grape.
What You Need To Know
In France, any old wine estate can call itself a “château ,” even if the grandest building on the property is a cement garage. Château de la Roulerie, on the other hand, is the real deal—an elegant, classically styled home set on 54 acres in the Loire River valley. It even takes its name, according to lore, from a knight who owned the estate in the 1300s. Owners Philippe and Marie Germain have spent the past decade rehabilitating its vineyards (now farmed organically) and refining its wines. Originally from Bordeaux, Philippe comes from a winemaking family. He shows a deft touch in this oak-free, entrylevel Chenin, which gets its creamy texture from aging on its spent yeast (called “lees”).
