Great sites for Merlot, such as Clos Bourbon’s in Bordeaux, yield wines with the grape’s signature roundness but also a tinge of stony minerality.
What You Need To Know
In French, the word clos means a property enclosed by a wall. An ancient stone wall over a mile long surrounds Clos Bourbon, an estate 25 miles south of the city of Bordeaux. Though the property dates to the 17th century, a new era began in 1994, when it was purchased by a young couple, the d’Halluins, who replanted the vineyard mainly to Merlot. Clos Bourbon’s appellation, the Premieres Cotes de Bordeaux, is an emerging area, making splendid reds from limestone and marl-based soils.
