Bordeaux’s rich 2009 vintage means that
wines from less-prestigious districts,
like Côtes de Bordeaux, offer great value.
What You Need To Know
Blaye is a sleepy town about 30 miles
downstream from the city of Bordeaux, on the right bank of the
Gironde river. Like virtually all estates in Blaye and its fellow Côtes
de Bordeaux subregions (Cadillac, Castillon and Francs), Château
des Tourtes focuses on Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon playing
a supporting role. The estate is owned and run by the Raguenot
family, including sisters Marie-Pierre and Emmanuelle Raguenot
and their spouses. Emmanuelle’s husband, Daren Miller, is
an American who fell in love with Emmanuelle when she interned
at a Pennsylvania winery; he manages the vineyards. The warm
2009 vintage gives this red an almost California-like plumpness.
