Australia’s McLaren Vale had a terrific
vintage in 2010, meaning that its reds—like
this bold Shiraz—make a great bet.
What You Need To Know
McLaren Vale was named an official
Australian wine region in 1971, but this coastal zone south
of Adelaide has been producing fine wine since the early 19th
century. Chapel Hill Winery was founded in the 1970s by a
professor from Adelaide, Tom Nelson. The property, located 10
minutes from the Gulf of St. Vincent, held an ironstone chapel
built in 1865 that was converted into a small winery. Today that
structure serves as the winery’s tasting room, and the estate
is owned by the Schmidheinys, a family of Swiss billionaires who
also own California’s Cuvaison. Chapel Hill’s respected chief
winemaker (and part-time DJ) Michael Fragos fashions this Shiraz
by blending fruit from McLaren Vale’s warmer and cooler zones
to achieve a beautifully balanced red.
