This lightly sweet South African white is made from Bukettraube, a rare German grape that’s incredibly fragrant.
What You Need To Know
South Africa’s wines have come of age in recent decades, with a dynamic generation of young winemakers—such as Cederberg’s David Nieuwoudt—pushing quality to new levels. Nieuwoudt is the fifth generation to helm his family’s 1893 estate, but only its third winemaker: Longtime cattle, tobacco and fruit farmers, the Nieuwoudts began making wine only in the 1970s. This Bukettraube is a terrific example of David Nieuwoudt’s penchant for experimentation. This uncommon German variety thrives in the cool evenings of Nieuwoudt’s vineyards, which are located in a wilderness preserve at nearly 3,500 feet above sea level.
