Grapes from rare Sonoma vines more than a century old give this Zinfandel its bold flavors and firm tannins.
What You Need To Know
It’s incredibly rare to find Sonoma vineyards that pre-date the 1890s, thanks (if that’s the word) to a deadly pest that destroyed grapevines throughout California. But the Rue Vineyard, from which this muscular Zinfandel comes, survived that decade’s scourge. Located in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, its ancient vines produce exactly the kind of small, complexly flavored grapes that Zin master Carol Shelton goes crazy for. Shelton makes lusty, exuberantly styled renditions of the grape from a handful of top vineyards. For this bottling, she kept the wine in barrels for nearly two years to soften its considerable tannins.
