Chardonnay vines flourish in the bright sun and sea air of southwest France, resulting in a rich white enlivened by zingy acidity.
What You Need To Know
In France, good Chardonnay is usually thought of as the exclusive product of cool, rainy Burgundy. But in the Languedoc, sunny, warm and dry conditions have shown a remarkable proclivity for producing compelling versions of this famous white grape. The soils here contain good percentages of limestone, which push Chardonnay toward complex, beautiful aromas that are hard to achieve in heavier soils, and the climate is bright but moderate, thanks to refreshing gusts of sea air off the nearby Mediterranean.
