Calcu is the affordable sister label of Viña
Maquis, a Chilean winery that’s creating
terrific wines in the Colchagua Valley.
What You Need To Know
Chile has become one of the world’s
best sources of delicious Sauvignon Blanc, though many of its
most acclaimed bottlings are coming not from Colchagua but
from coastal zones such as Leyda and Casablanca, where sea
breezes moderate hot summers. But Calcu’s winemaker, Juan
Alejandro Jofré, spent a stint at New Zealand’s Villa Maria, a
Marlborough winery famous for its terrific Sauvignon Blanc. That
experience might explain how Jofré and co-winemaker Ricardo
Rivadeneira Hurtado created this zesty bottling. It comes from
two vineyard blocks on the Viña Maquis estate, a Colchagua
property planted to vineyards nearly a century ago by
Rivadeneira’s family. One trick: The duo deliberately picked some
underripe grapes, whose crunchy acidity gives this white its
