This savory Syrah was made by one of the
US’s masters of Rhône varieties with grapes
from one of California’s greatest vineyards.
What You Need To Know
The Bien Nacido vineyard, from
which this Syrah hails, is a legendary hillside property located on
the central California coast. Sprawling over 800 acres, it produces
an outsize number of benchmark red and white wines, chiefly
from Burgundian and Rhône varieties. The Miller family, who own
the property, sell grapes to a roster of vintners that reads like a
Who’s Who in California wine, including Bonny Doon’s Randall
Grahm. An influential pioneer of Rhône wines in the US, Grahm is
particularly excited about the 2009 vintage of his Bien Nacido
Syrah—as was our entire tasting team. With its extravagant
aromas of smoked meat, herbs and spice, and rich, tightly coiled
fruit, this is definitive, cool-climate California Syrah. Just 34
barrels were produced.
Herb-accented scents of
plum, olive and smoked meat.
Deep, fresh and rich,
with tight, meaty currant
and spice notes.
Decant and serve at cellar
should be cool to the touch.
Earthy braises and stews;
rare steaks and chops.
