In a great Rioja vintage like 2005, even modest reserva reds can age well for years after release, as this example demonstrates.
What You Need To Know
Rioja’s reds are based on Tempranillo, a cherry-inflected grape that, depending on how it’s treated, can yield wines that are earthy, firm and spicy, or smooth and lusciously fruity. This reserva bottling was produced by Rioja Vega, a winery that has been around (in one form or another) since 1882, and splits the difference between the styles. Its spice, leather and anise notes show the savoriness typical of old-school reservas, but there’s enough plum fruit to make it satisfyingly rich, too.
