This Grenache Blanc comes from two moonlighting
winemaker buddies in the Central
Coast, the heart of California’s Rhône Zone.
What You Need To Know
By day, Josh Baker and Matt Brain
make wine for other people—Baker at Edna Valley Vineyards, and
Brain at a custom crush facility. By night, they mastermind their
own label, fashioning micro-lots of single-vineyard wine, such
as this juicy, graceful Grenache Blanc. One of the dominant white
grapes of France’s Rhône Valley, Grenache Blanc produces plump
whites with apple and citrus flavors. In 2012, the duo purchased
Grenache Blanc grapes from the Edna Valley’s Paragon Vineyard,
located in one of the coolest subregions of the vast Central Coast.
The site’s chilly temperatures mean that this Grenache Blanc
retains a juicy freshness that examples from warmer regions lack.
To give the wine a rounder texture, Brain and Baker fermented the
juice (all five barrels of it) in French oak.
