Star South African vintner Adi Badenhorst
fashions some of the country’s best wines
from the up-and-coming Swartland region.
What You Need To Know
When cousins Adi and Hein
Badenhorst started their own winery in 2008, they looked past
the manicured estates of South Africa’s prestigious Stellenbosch
region and headed instead to Swartland, a rugged area about
an hour’s drive north of Cape Town. Drawn by its gnarly old bush
vines and a few pockets of prized granite soils, Adi set about
making wines the old-fashioned way. Farming and winemaking
naturally, Badenhorst began turning out Chenin Blanc-based
whites and Southern Rh.ne-inspired reds of captivating purity
and finesse. Since its first vintage in 2009, Badenhorst’s
Secateurs Chenin Blanc has stood out as a textbook rendition
of South Africa’s flagship white grape variety.
