Spain’s lesser-known regions have become a
source of incredible red wine values, like this
juicy Monastrell from Castilla-La Mancha.
What You Need To Know
The Monastrell grape makes spicy,
inky reds loaded with dark-fruit flavors. It is planted widely
throughout southeast Spain, where the variety is perfectly adapted
to the warm climate. Until recently, most Monastrell went into
uninteresting bulk wines. But in recent years some winemakers
have applied quality-focused winemaking to the variety with
spectacular results. This bottling comes from Bodegas Agr’colas
Aguaza, which is located in Castilla-La Mancha, an up-and-coming
region where the blazing summer heat is moderated by proximity
to Mediterranean breezes. The winery and vineyards are located
on a high, arid plane at an elevation of nearly 3,000 feet. That
elevation is critical: Cool nights and slow ripening create a red
wine that’s juicy and fresh, not sweetly overripe.
