Austria’s Zweigelt is easier to drink than it is to pronounce, thanks to its juicy, food-friendly black-fruit flavors.
What You Need To Know
Best known for its aromatic Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners, Austria also turns out terrific reds, mostly from Burgenland, a region along the Hungarian border. Though still obscure in the US, Zweigelt (ZVY-gelt) is Austria’s most popular red wine, beloved for its spicy, licorice-edged cherry flavors and vibrant acidity. This example comes from Alex Schreiner, a one of a handful of dynamic young vintners bringing new attention to Burgenland’s reds. Alex helps his father with the family winery but also makes a handful of wines under his own label, including this estate-grown offering, made with organic grapes.
