Alder Springs is a remote, precipitously steep vineyard in Mendocino that is one of California’s greatest sites for Syrah.
What You Need To Know
Alder Springs owner Stuart Bewley made a fortune from California Cooler, the beverage that ushered in the wine cooler craze of the 1980s. After selling the business in 1985, Bewley set his sights higher—literally. With the goal of growing world-class wine, Bewley purchased a 6,000-acre former cattle ranch high in the rugged Mendocino hills. Located 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the property has proved to be phenomenally well-suited to Syrah, attracting cult labels such as Pax and Patz & Hall as customers for its fruit. Bewley keeps a small amount of grapes for his own estate label, relying on respected winemaker Byron Kosgue (ex-Saintsbury) to mastermind the wines. Just 227 cases of this Syrah were made.
