Angela Velenosi makes an eclectic array of wines at her ambitious estate in Italy’s Marche region, but those made from the region’s native grapes, like this Pecorino, stand out. Vintners across central Italy have rediscovered this ancient variety, which makes fresh, medium- to full-bodied white wines of unusual intensity. With an assist from well-known Tuscan consultant Attilio Pagli, Velenosi ages estate-grown Pecorino grapes in steel tanks (not barrels), a technique that keeps their lush fruit flavors incredibly vibrant. The Villa Angela vineyard, from which this bottling comes, is located in Offida, a medieval town best known for its refined lacework and, more recently, as a top Pecorino zone.
