In Spain’s Ribera del Duero region, cool nights produce vivid red, elegant red wines, such as this cherry-inflected reserva.
What You Need To Know
Tempranillo, the grape responsible for Spain’s greatest red wines, may not be as familiar to Americans as Cabernet or Merlot, but it should be. The dominant grape of Spain’s premier red wine regions, Rioja and Ribera del Duero, it makes delicious, medium- to full-bodied reds that range from earthy, old-school bottlings to flashy, powerful wines brimming with black-fruit flavors. With its deep red cherry fruit and velvety tannins, this example from Bodegas Tamaral leans toward the modern end of Tempranillo’s style spectrum, though it maintains a classic sense of balance. It comes from Tamaral’s oldest vines (some of them about a century old) and spent two years mellowing in oak barrels.
