Powered by sunlight, biodiesel and weedeating sheep, this organic producer makes wines from a small Sonoma estate.
What You Need To Know
In his square-framed glasses and crisply pressed black shirts, thirtysomething vintner Ames Morison looks less like an organic farmer than a hip sommelier at a buzzedabout restaurant. But farming—of a decidedly low-tech sort— is exactly what Morison delved into when he and college buddy Christopher Medlock James created their eco-conscious winery in 1998. Its 50 acres of vines lie on Bell Mountain, in the cooler, southern half of Sonoma’s Alexander Valley. Its warm days and brisk nights yield full-flavored wines with terrific balance—like this citrusy Sauvignon Blanc.
