There’s more to Italy’s famed Piedmont region than Barolo and Barbaresco, as this rich, earthy red demonstrates.
What You Need To Know
Until the last 40 years or so, few small grape farmers in Piedmont made their own wine commercially. Today, boutique, family-run wineries like Elio Filippino are a common sight in the rolling hillsides of this northeastern region. Patriarch Paolino Filippino began to produce tiny amounts of wine in the late 1940s and, as his wines got better, began selling fewer grapes and more finished wine. The Filippinos focus on traditional Piedmont cuvées, such as Barbaresco, Barolo and Barbera, made from only their own grapes. But they also offer this modern-style blend of two French grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah) and two local varieties (Barbera and Nebbiolo). The result is an earthy, powerful red loaded with fruit, structure and spice.
