With its unusually intense black-fruit flavors, this bold Barbera shows the warmth of Piedmont’s 2009 vintage.
What You Need To Know
Italy’s Piedmont region is famous for reds like Barolo and Barbaresco that require decades to reach their peak. But for wines made to drink sooner, do what the Piedmontese do and reach for a Barbera. This supple, juicy red is incredibly foodfriendly and usually requires just a year or two of aging until it’s ready to drink. This blackberry-driven bottling from Cascina del Pozzo spent a year mellowing in steel tanks and is just beginning to show its softer side. It’s made by the handsome, affable Marchisio family—Flavio and son Gianmario—who keep grapes from their Fossamara vineyard separate to create this small-lot cuvée.
