Winemaker Derek Rohlffs is best known for
his micro-lots of cool-climate Pinot Noir, but
also fashions this affordable red blend.
What You Need To Know
Derek Rohlffs first discovered wine
while working in casinos out of college, where world-class bottles
were uncorked regularly at events for high rollers. An interest in
wine turned into a passion, and eventually—after 15 years in
marketing the casino business, a leap into wine retail, coursework
and apprenticeships—Rohlffs became a winemaker himself. He
focuses on site-specific, traditionally made Burgundian varietals
for his flagship Bravium label, but makes a handful of less serious
wines from other grape varieties. This is the fourth time he has
released a nonvintage red under the “Lucky” label from premium
fruit grown in California’s North Coast. Blending four robust
varieties—Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet, and Malbec—it’s bold,
balanced and ridiculously easy to drink.
Rich black cherry
and currant notes.
A juicy mix of black plum
and spice flavors.
Cellar temperature—the bottle should be
cool to the touch.
Grilled and barbecued meats;
sausages, chops and roasts.
