This Zinfandel comes from Rockpile, a Sonoma subzone that sits on a high, sunny ridge northwest of the town of Healdsburg.
What You Need To Know
At the age of 16, Ulises Valdez forded a neck-high river to slip across the Mexican border into California, where he found work pruning grapevines in Dry Creek Valley. Today he’s the owner of one of Sonoma’s most respected vineyard management companies and, fulfilling a long-cherished dream, his own winery and tasting room. Valdez’s exacting standards in vinegrowing have made him a crucial partner to a Who’s Who of Northern California winemaking rock stars (Mark Aubert, Paul Hobbs); they’re also what make his namesake wines such consistently good bets. This Zinfandel comes from a single vineyard that Valdez planted in Rockpile, a small Sonoma subzone that, thanks to rocky soils and hot days, has become a go-to zone for premium Zinfandel.
