Matt Cline’s brilliant Zinfandels gained his
family’s Cline Cellars fame; today he’s
focused on his own boutique label, Three.
What You Need To Know
Although he makes the occasional
Albariño or late-harvest Riesling, Matt Cline is chiefly obsessed
with red wines. Specifically, lush, spicy and deeply fruity reds
from grapes such as Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Carignane.
Fortunately, Cline knows California’s cache of top vineyards for
these grapes as well as (or better) than anyone, having logged
thousands of miles each year for his family’s Cline Cellars. Today
he puts that knowledge to use for Three, the label he and wife Erin
founded in 2007. Cline sourced this Zinfandel from Contra Costa,
a mostly suburban county outside San Francisco. As is traditional,
Cline blended in small amounts of complementary varieties, such
as spicy Petite Sirah and tannic Carignane.
Spicy plum and berry notes.
Raspberry and blackberry
flavors are rich and vibrant.
Cellar temperature—the bottle should be
cool to the touch.
Boldly flavored meat dishes,
especially those that are
braised, smoked or grilled.
