Stellekaya’s precociously talented Ntsiki
Biyela was named South Africa’s Woman
Winemaker of the Year in 2009.
What You Need To Know
Ntsiki Biyela joined Stellekaya in
2004, a year after receiving her undergraduate degree in
viticulture and enology from the University of Stellenbosch. It
was an auspicious start: With an assist from then-consultant Peet
Le Roux, Biyela’s 2004 Cape Cross red blend went on to win gold
at the Michelangelo Awards, which is like the South African
Oscars for wine. It was the first such award for a black South
African winemaker (Biyela is Zulu) and made her a rising star.
Founded by technology entrepreneur Dave Lello, Stellekaya is a
small, estate-focused winery in Stellenbosch. Biyela’s 2009
Cabernet offers a refined combination of deep fruit and savory,
Cedary plum and black-currant
Cabernet, with black-currant
and tobacco notes.
Cellar temperature—the bottle should be
cool to the touch.
Intense, simply flavored
red meat dishes.
