Ben Riggs, one of the stars of Australian wine, searches out South Australia’s cooler corners to fashion this vibrant Shiraz.
What You Need To Know
Elegance is not a word that springs to mind first when it comes to $15 Australian Shiraz, but that’s exactly what supertalented winemaker Ben Riggs aims for. The pursuit of balanced—not bombastic—wine means that Riggs spends an awful lot of time canvassing regions across South Australia (an area three times the size of Italy). For his Shoofly Shiraz, Riggs blended fruit from McLaren Vale (a zone freshened by breezes off the Gulf St. Vincent), nearby Langhorne Creek and the cool Clare Valley. The result is a fruity, rich red that’s also spicy and lively—even, you might say, elegant.
