If you were to invent a region for
producing rich, deeply flavored red wines, you might come up with a
place like Calatayud. Located deep in the interior of north-central
Spain, Calatayud has a continental climate with bone-chilling
winters and hot, dry summers. Soils are low in nutrients and high
in rocks and limestone. All this comes together perfectly to
produce buoyant, fruity Grenache that still reflects the region’s
dusty earthiness and stony depths.
