Portugal’s terrific table wines are often
overshadowed by its magnificent ports, but,
as this red shows, they’re worth seeking out.
What You Need To Know
Cristiano and Álvaro Van Zeller—
members of a Portuguese dynasty that’s been involved in wine
since the 17th century—created the Proeza label to highlight a
range of top Portuguese wine regions. They make some wine from
Van Zeller–owned estates, and for others they collaborate with
well-regarded vintners. For this plummy red from the central Dão
region, the Van Zellers teamed up with Nuno Cancela de Abreu, a
fourth-generation winemaker who founded an ambitious Dão-based
label in the early 1990s. The 2010 Boas Quintas Proeza
showcases the elegance and purity that the Dão is known for—a
result of its relatively cool climate.
