Portugal is best known for its red wines, but Douro whites can be delicious, too—like this citrusy blend of native grape varieties.
What You Need To Know
Portugal’s dry table wines (as opposed to port, the well-known, fortified, sweet wine) are often terrific values. A case in point is this white from Quinta de la Rosa, a small estate owned by the Bergqvist family. The Bergqvists have been a part of Portuguese wine since 1815, when an ancestor founded a successful port shipping company. In the 1930s they sold their shipping business but held on to Quinta de la Rosa, a stunning estate in the prime Cima Corgo region, along the Douro River. Made from a blend of traditional, obscure white varieties, this luscious, grapefruity white gets its concentration from very old vines and its silky texture from partial aging in oak barrels.
