Savvy Burgundy fans look to the region’s
Hautes-Côtes de Nuits zone, where this
cherry-scented red is from, for good deals.
What You Need To Know
With its silky texture, effortless depth
and aromas of violets, cherries and earth, good red Burgundy is
the ultimate in Pinot Noir, which is exactly why most Burgundy is
expensive. The Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, though, is a treasure trove
of affordably priced Burgundy, though choosing wisely is key.
Boutique vintner Olivier Jouan comes from a family that has been
growing grapes in Burgundy for six generations, though he is the
first member to make wine from them commercially. Jouan uses
grapes only from his family’s vineyards, and unlike most Hautes-
Côtes de Nuits bottlings, this one comes from a single, small,
organically farmed parcel of vines. Jouan’s intense focus on each
of his small-lot wines shows in this red’s lovely balance.
