Fifth-generation Port master Dirk Niepoort makes alluring dry wines, too, including this juicy, lime-inflected Vinho Verde.
What You Need To Know
It’s easy to imagine that Portugal’s Vinho Verde (“green wine”) gets its name from its color—white with a faint greenish tint. On the other hand, some people theorize that the description comes from its youth: These light, fresh whites are released in the spring and traditionally drunk young. But locals will tell you that “verde” refers to the place they’re from, which is a lush, rain-prone slice of northern coast whose emerald hills could stand in for Brigadoon. While several native grape varieties thrive here, winemaker Dirk Niepoort zeroed in on Loureiro grapes for this bottling. Grown in stony granite soils and fermented in stainless steel, they yielded an uncommonly polished example of the region’s zesty whites.
