Reds made from the powerful Aglianico grape
can require years of aging to be enjoyable;
this juicy bottling is delicious right now.
What You Need To Know
Aglianico is the signature grape of
Basilicata, the mountainous region in the instep of the Italian
“boot.” This firm red comes from a vineyard in Aglianico del
Vulture, Basilicata’s premier wine-growing zone, which is located
in the shadow of Mount Vulture, a (fortunately) extinct volcano.
Eons of violent eruptions coated the surrounding countryside in
layers of ash and lava; today this porous, minerally rock creates the
perfect soil for grape-growing. Macarico’s Rino Botte makes a
renowned, high-end Aglianico that’s among the region’s top
bottles. His rosso offers a taste of the grape at an accessible
