Like all crianza wines from Spain’s Ribera
del Duero region, this juicy red is made from
the Tempranillo grape.
What You Need To Know
Tempranillo may not be as familiar
to Americans as Cabernet or Merlot, but it should be. Best known
as the dominant grape of Spain’s two premier red wine regions,
Rioja and Ribera del Duero, it makes delicious, medium- to
full- bodied reds. The wines can range from earthy, old-school
bottlings to flashy, powerful wines brimming with black-fruit
flavors. This example from Ribera comes from Bodegas Lleiroso,
a fairly new winery (founded 2005) from two winemakers, Pascual
Herrera and Alberto Cobo. It tacks a midcourse between modern
and traditional styles, with ripe fruit and well-balanced oak.
