Grapes for this Grüner Veltliner get their tropical lushness from a site where stones and terraced slopes soak up heat and sunlight.
What You Need To Know
Austria’s Wagram region is a sweeping plateau of mineral-rich rock along the Danube River. Its relative obscurity serves the increasing number of US Grüner Veltliner fans well: A critical mass of quality-focused Wagram vintners like Leth are turning out crisp, mineral-laden examples of Austria’s signature white that can compete with those from more famous zones (like Wachau), but at easier-to-swallow prices. Founded in the 1960s by Franz and Barbara Leth, the 50-acre Leth estate includes the Steinagrund (“stony ground”) vineyard, from which this bottling comes. Mouthfilling and crisp, it exemplifies Grüner’s zesty, minerally charm.
