Mount Ventoux may be most famous as a brutal climb on the Tour de France, but the region’s wines are worth a detour, as this cassis-driven red demonstrates.
What You Need To Know
Domaine Les Terrasses d’Eole is a small, family-run estate in Mazan, one of those impossibly sunny and picturesque Provençal towns dotted with Gallo-Roman ruins. Dominated by the snow-capped peak of Mount Ventoux, the area is part of the Rhône Valley region, where red wines are all blends based on the fruity, supple Grenache grape. The Saurel family had always sold their grapes to the local cooperative, until Stéphane Saurel convinced his father to build a winery and let him make the wine. They named their estate after the Greek god of wind, Eole (Aeolus), in honor of the powerful mistral that scours the vines for much of the year and helps to concentrate flavors in the grapes. Saurel shows a deft hand in this traditional blend, which offers evocative hints of lavender and earth.
