Bordeaux’s outlying districts are a terrific source of good value reds, as this muscular wine from Château Fillon demonstrates.
What You Need To Know
Bordeaux’s grands crus command attention and high prices, but the huge region is bursting with obscure, affordably priced châteaus—many of them making terrific wine. Château Fillon is located about 30 miles east of the city of Bordeaux, in a wine district classified as Bordeaux Supérieur. That designation stands one level above generic Bordeaux, but is still humble compared to small, prestigious zones such as Margaux. In recent years, Fillon has been on an upswing, thanks to its new owner, an Alsace-based company that has reinvigorated the estate. An equal blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvigon, L’ Apogée comes from vines at least 35 years old.
