Bordeaux’s grands crus command
attention and high prices, but the huge region is bursting with
obscure, affordably priced châteaus—many of them making
terrific wine. Château Fillon is located about 30 miles east of the
city of Bordeaux, in a wine district classified as Bordeaux
Supérieur. That designation stands one level above generic
Bordeaux, but is still humble compared to small, prestigious
zones such as Margaux. In recent years, Fillon has been on an
upswing, thanks to its new owner, an Alsace-based company that
has reinvigorated the estate. An equal blend of Merlot and
Cabernet Sauvigon, L’ Apogée comes from vines at least 35
Classic Bordeaux scents of
black currant and leather.
